Lance the Inventor

Lance was a cheerful, young groundhog. His passion was to invent and his inventions were remarkable. He had invented an airplane that could fly and a parachute too. He also invented a zip line and a pogo stick.

His laboratory was in a giant hole near the Old Oak Tree. One day, Lance overheard a frog talking to a rabbit just above his hole. The frog said, “Tomorrow is the Great Talent Competition. If you have any talent, you have the choice to reveal it in front of all the forest animals. The animal with the greatest talent would receive the Triumphant Talent Trophy.” Lance was excited. He began preparing for the competition as soon as possible. He polished his airplane, painted it with the brightest colours and created the most vibrant parachutes ever. The next day, he hurriedly took his inventions to the competition. He saw hundreds of artists with beautiful sculptures, colourful paintings and stunning masterpieces. He joyfully demonstrated his work to the public. However, the forest animals could find no appropriate use of an airplane, parachute or zip-line. Hence, they jeered at his work and criticised him. Only Nuts, the squirrel, Robert, the deer and Mr. Woodtail, the beaver understood his efforts and appreciated him. But, he was quite depressed by the forest’s response. He went behind an oak tree and began weeping. Nuts, Robert and Mr. Woodtail consoled the sobbing groundhog. They said, “Don’t be disheartened. The animals will appreciate your work soon enough. We just need to find a proper use of your inventions.”

Just then, a sudden scream echoed through the forest. Nuts, Robert, Mr. Woodtail and Lance rushed to the area. There they saw Mr. Thompson the owl carrying a rabbit in his claws.

Lance leapt into action and flew his plane high up in the sky. When Mr. Thompson, who had never seen a plane before, saw a huge flying object with sharp front blades, he was startled and dropped the rabbit. Lance jumped out  of the plane, grabbed the rabbit and opened his parachute, ensuring a safe landing. When he landed, the huge crowds at the competition applauded his bravery. He won the trophy and became the “inventor of the forest”. Everyone who needed an invention came to Lance. Nobody criticised him and all his inventions were wilfully accepted.

And so, all work is worthy. It just depends on the situation.
